On this Earth Day – Be Inspired by Man & Nature
It is hard to believe, but the first Earth Day took place 46 years ago in an effort to increase awareness to the brilliance and also the fragility of our great planet. Earth Day Network’s mission is to broaden and diversify the environmental movement worldwide and to mobilize it as the most effective vehicle to build a healthy, sustainable environment, address climate change, and protect the Earth for future generations.
The idea for a national day to focus on the environment came to Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, he realized that if he could infuse that energy with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution, it would force environmental protection onto the national political agenda.
And it worked…
More than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world. Do you want to be inspired? The Billion Acts of Green initiative is the largest environmental service campaign in the world which garners support from individuals, organizations, businesses, and governments in which commitments are made to help protect the planet. Not only have they passed one billion acts since 2010, but they have also surpassed 2 billion acts to make our planet a better place to live!
Much of the credit for the today’s environmental consciousness, research, and solutions can be credited to the awareness brought to the masses within this movement. Acts such as the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, and many others are a direct result of the Earth Day movement.
Now in 196 countries, the movement continues to gather steam as we seek out ways to be inspired and look to create a brighter tomorrow for future generations. We can all make an impact with just a little effort, and with more and more people on board, the Earth Day movement is sure to continue to gain momentum as awareness increases.
