Younger generations entering the workforce today are seeking greater work-life balance than previous generations did. More freedom in terms of family, time schedule, and earning potential are becoming increasingly important. Here is a list of 10 reason why so many people are deciding to blaze their own trail – to be an entrepreneur – rather than falling into the corporate milieu.
1. Family.
Family is the biggest motivating factor that so many people cite as the reason they want to be an entrepreneur. This seems to be true no matter the situation. Having the ability to make it to all kids’ functions, and being able to spend more quality time with family are the driving force behind many entrepreneurial ventures.
2. Creativity.
Often the corporate environment you choose to enter may already have their set ways of doing certain things. There is not much room for creativity. Some people might feel like they don’t fit into the corporate setting, and they would much prefer using their creativity rather than following orders and mindless busywork.
3. Flexibility.
Admittedly there will be a lot of hard work. Having said that, there’s much more flexibility to the entrepreneurial lifestyle than the traditional 9 to 5. You have the ability to create a schedule that works for you rather than fitting your life around someone else’s schedule.
4. Learning.
Learning is lifelong quest for knowledge. The most successful entrepreneurs are not satiated with the knowledge they have — they are constantly seeking more. Find something you are passionate about and learn everything there is to know so that you are the authority.
5. Make the world better.
How great would it be to really change the world? That mindset is what drives so many of the great entrepreneurs. “There’s lots of bad reasons to start a company. But there’s only one good, legitimate reason, and I think you know what it is: it’s to change the world.” – Phil Libin, CEO of Evernote.
6. Control of your own destiny.
Your future is far too important to leave in the hands of someone else. In a corporate environment, getting lost in the shuffle or stuck in one position is commonplace. With passion, the right ideas, and a willingness to take action, you can create the future of your dreams.
7. Money, money, money.
At a traditional job, earning potential is dictated by the job position, or a contract a union negotiated. You might get an occasional raise or promotion, but for most people, they are few and far between. Your earning potential likely has a ceiling no matter how long you stay at that job. Entrepreneurs have the earning potential to break right through the ceiling.
8. Location freedom.
Owning your own business gives you the ability to create something that allows you to live anywhere you desire. Many corporate jobs are tied down to just one location, but as an entrepreneur the possibilities are endless.
9. Leave a legacy.
Many business owners pass their business down to younger generations. There is so much pride in a family business, and many entrepreneurs are motivated by the ability to leave a lasting legacy, whether it be for their family, or even for the world.
10. Independence.
You answer to YOU, nobody else. No more taking orders. You are the ultimate decision-maker.
