The short answer: To rank on ChatGPT, your business must be easy for AI to find, understand, and trust. That means a website OpenAI can crawl, a plain description of what you do, direct answers to the questions your buyers ask, the same story everywhere your business appears, and credible sources beyond your own website that back you up. There is no single hack and no guaranteed position.

Event bookers have hired me for keynotes months in advance because they asked ChatGPT who the top female AI keynote speaker was, and my name came back. I did not spend a dollar on advertising.

I did not get there by accident. I have spent years building AI companies, and I treat AI search as a system that can be learned. When I launched Amsara, my telehealth company, in September 2026, I applied the same steps. Within one week it was the first answer AI search gave me for concierge menopause care in Arizona.

This article lays out those steps so that you can apply them to your own business.

What does it mean to rank on ChatGPT?

ChatGPT does not have one permanent number one position the way a Google results page does. It searches the web, weighs information from several sources, and writes an answer for the question in front of it. The answer can change with the wording, the location, and the day. OpenAI does not guarantee placement to anyone.

So the real goal is bigger than one ranking. You want AI to find you, understand you, connect you with the right topics, and cite or recommend you when the question fits. I call that getting FOUND in AI search.

Traditional SEO asks how to move higher on a list of links. AI search asks a different question: how do I become a source the AI trusts enough to use in its answer?

Traditional search gives your buyer a list. AI search gives your buyer an answer. Your job is to be in the answer.

Why ranking on ChatGPT matters in 2026

Your buyers are changing how they search. They no longer open a browser and compare ten websites. They ask an assistant a full question:

  • Who provides this service near me?
  • What companies specialise in this?
  • What course can teach me this?

The assistant then writes one answer. Your buyer may meet your company inside that answer before ever visiting your website. If your competitors are in the answer and you are not, you lose the sale before you knew it existed.

This does not mean SEO is dead. It means you now need both search engine optimisation and answer engine optimisation, often shortened to AEO. You do not replace your strategy. You expand it.

The Get FOUND Method for ChatGPT and AI search

I created The Get FOUND Method to help business owners become easier for AI to understand, trust, and surface. You do not need to be a developer. You do not need to publish hundreds of generic articles. You need five things, in order: Foundation, Optimise, Unify, Narrative, Distribute.

F is for Foundation: make your business legible to AI

Say plainly what you do. Your website should answer these questions within seconds: who you serve, what you do, what problem you solve, where you operate, and why you are credible.

AI should not have to decode clever marketing. Compare these two lines:

  • “We empower brands to achieve limitless possibilities.”
  • “We teach small business owners how to improve their visibility in ChatGPT and AI search.”

The second line can be quoted, matched to a question, and recommended. The first cannot. Clarity wins.

Make sure OpenAI can reach your website. This is the technical step most businesses miss. OpenAI uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot to surface websites in ChatGPT search. According to OpenAI’s crawler documentation, a site that opts out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, although it may still appear as a navigational link.

Ask whoever manages your website to check:

  • robots.txt
  • noindex settings
  • firewall and bot protection rules
  • canonical tags
  • your XML sitemap

OpenAI also runs a separate crawler, GPTBot, for content that may be used to train its models. The two are managed independently. You can allow OAI-SearchBot so you appear in ChatGPT search and still say no to GPTBot. Search visibility and training permission are two different settings.

O is for Optimise: answer the exact questions your buyers ask

Write for the question, and lead with the answer. Think about what your buyer would actually say to ChatGPT:

  • How do I rank on ChatGPT?
  • How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my business?
  • Can a local business show up in ChatGPT?
  • Is AEO different from SEO?

Build a page or an article around each question. Give the direct answer in the first two sentences, then explain it. That is good writing for people and good structure for machines.

Add structured data where it is accurate. Schema tells a machine what a page represents: an organisation, a person, an article, a course, a product, a local business, an event. It is not a magic ranking factor. Think of it as one more layer of clarity.

Keep your most important pages current. AI search changes quickly. Review your key pages regularly and update the examples, tools, statistics, and links. Do not simply change the date. Improve the content.

U is for Unify: tell one story everywhere

Your business name, your leadership, your services, your locations, and your areas of expertise should match across your website, LinkedIn, your Google Business Profile, and every directory that lists you.

If your LinkedIn profile says one thing, your website says another, and an old directory says a third, AI has no way to know which one is true. Consistency is a trust signal a machine can verify.

This step alone moves results. Galina Valean, founder of CreateCaster in Los Angeles, cleaned up her online presence and made it consistent. She reported about 200% more traffic from AI search within 30 days. That is one student’s experience, and results vary, but it shows how much weight consistency carries.

N is for Narrative: build authority beyond your own website

Earn mentions from credible third parties. Your website matters, but it cannot be the only place that connects you with your expertise. Look for opportunities on podcasts, industry publications, association and event websites, partner websites, reputable directories, and customer case studies.

When credible sources describe you the same way you describe yourself, that is stronger evidence than anything you publish alone.

Use video to build searchable authority. Do not try to make every video go viral. Record videos that answer one specific question each, such as “How to tell whether ChatGPT can find your business.”

Then put each recording to work. One useful video can become a YouTube video, short clips, a blog post, a LinkedIn article, an email, and a searchable transcript. One piece of expertise now has many chances to be found.

AI names the businesses it has a reason to cite. Give it a reason.

D is for Distribute: measure your AI visibility and maintain it

Do not test one prompt once and call that your ranking. AI answers vary. Write a set of five to ten questions your buyers would really ask, such as:

  • Who helps small businesses rank on ChatGPT?
  • What courses teach AI search optimisation?
  • What is the best way to get found in AI search?

Ask them in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity. Record whether your brand appears, whether your website is cited, which competitors appear, and which outside sources are referenced. Repeat the check every month.

Think in terms of visibility across a category, not one keyword position. My free 5 Minute AI Visibility Test gives you the prompts and a scorecard to start today.

Can you really rank number one on ChatGPT?

Not in the fixed way most people picture a Google ranking. ChatGPT answers shift with the question and the context. A business can be the first name given for one question and absent from the next.

A better goal is to become one of the clearest, most credible, and most consistently discoverable sources in your category. That creates more long term value than one favourable screenshot.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?

There is no guaranteed timeline. It depends on how established your website is, how competitive your category is, your existing authority, and how directly your content answers real questions.

Some changes register quickly. Galina saw movement in 30 days, and Amsara appeared within a week of launch for a very specific local search. Broad, competitive categories take longer. I do not recommend chasing shortcuts. Build strong signals.

Can a small business show up in ChatGPT?

Yes. You do not have to be the biggest company in your market. A small business often has an advantage because it can be specific about its niche, its customer, its geography, and the problem it solves. Specificity makes relevance easy to understand.

The biggest AI search mistake businesses are making

Waiting.

We have watched this before. Businesses waited on websites, then mobile, then social media, then SEO. Each time, the ones who learned early paid less and gained more.

When I was ten, my father, an engineer, handed me The Art of War and told me to read it. The lesson that stayed with me was to adapt to your terrain. The terrain of search has shifted. The right response is not panic. It is to learn while the behaviour is still forming.

Ask yourself one question. If someone asked ChatGPT today for exactly what I provide, would it clearly understand who I am and what my business does? If the answer is no, that is where you start.

The terrain of search has shifted. Adapt to it while your competitors are still waiting.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rank on ChatGPT?

There is no single permanent number one position in ChatGPT. You improve your visibility by making your website accessible to OpenAI’s search crawler, describing your business plainly, answering buyer questions directly, keeping your information consistent, and earning credible mentions.

How do I get my business to show up in ChatGPT?

Start with a clear description of who you serve and what you do. Publish it on your website and match it on every profile and directory. Then add pages that answer the questions your buyers ask ChatGPT.

Can ChatGPT recommend my business?

Yes, when your business is relevant to the question and ChatGPT can describe it with confidence. No one can guarantee a recommendation. You can control how clear, consistent, and citable your business is.

Does SEO still matter?

Yes. SEO and AEO overlap heavily. Strong technical foundations, valuable content, and authority matter in both.

What does AEO mean?

AEO stands for answer engine optimisation. It is the practice of making your content easy for AI answer engines to understand and use when they respond to a question.

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. AEO extends your search strategy. It does not replace it.

How can I tell whether ChatGPT can find my website?

Ask ChatGPT the questions your buyers would ask and note whether your brand or website appears. Then have your web team confirm that the site is public and that OAI-SearchBot is not blocked in robots.txt or by a firewall.
