This week, I’m at the National Speakers Association, where the top speakers in the country have gathered to discuss the current landscape, the opportunities ahead, and how to scale our businesses. And right in the middle of it, this story broke: on Saturday, July 26, 2026, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said on the Relentless podcast, “We are now, like, in the singularity.” Not “we’re approaching it.” Not “it’s coming by 2030.” We are in it — right now.

The irony wasn’t lost on anyone in the room. Many small business owners — including speakers — are still trying to figure out how to use a CRM. And yet here was the CEO of the world’s most-used AI company declaring that the most consequential technological transition in human history isn’t a future event we’re preparing for. It’s the water we’re already swimming in.

As someone who speaks on AI stages around the world, I can tell you the singularity question comes up constantly. For years, my answer reflected the general consensus: a timeline of roughly 2030. But advancements in compute power — including the optimization of CPUs for GPU-style AI workloads — have naturally accelerated that timeline. What was a forecast has become a live conversation, and it begs a larger question I heard echoing through the hallways this week: how will the singularity affect small to mid-size business owners?

So let’s slow down and do what I always encourage my audiences to do: define the term, look at the evidence, and think clearly about what it means for you.

What Is the Technological Singularity?

The technological singularity is a theoretical point at which artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence and becomes capable of improving itself — creating a cycle of accelerating change so rapid and profound that human civilization is transformed in ways we cannot fully predict or control.

The idea has a rich history. Mathematician John von Neumann speculated in the 1950s about an approaching point where technological progress would become “incomprehensibly rapid and complex.” In 1993, computer scientist and author Vernor Vinge popularized the term, arguing that the creation of superhuman intelligence would represent “a kind of singularity in the history of the planet.” Futurist Ray Kurzweil then made it famous, predicting the singularity would arrive around 2045, with human-level AI arriving years earlier.

Notice something important: the singularity was always framed as a future event — 2045, then 2030-something as estimates tightened. What’s new is the claim that the future has already arrived.

What Exactly Did Sam Altman Say?

On the July 26 episode of the Relentless podcast, Altman declared: “We are now, like, in the singularity,” adding, “I’ve been waiting for this my whole life” and “Now we’re actually in the moment that we used to talk about at the lunch table.” He characterized the shift as “hugely positive, awesome for the world.”

This wasn’t an offhand comment. It builds directly on his June 2025 essay, “The Gentle Singularity,” in which he wrote, “We are past the event horizon; the takeoff has started.” In that essay, Altman predicted AI agents doing real cognitive work in 2025, systems discovering novel scientific insights in 2026, and robots performing real-world tasks by 2027. His central argument: the singularity won’t feel like a lightning strike. It will be gradual — “gentle” — with each astonishing capability quickly becoming routine.

Context matters here, too. ChatGPT now serves roughly 900 million weekly users. AI agents are booking travel, writing software, and analyzing medical data. The science-fiction question — “When will machines think?” — has quietly become a customer-service question: “Which thinking machine should my business use?”

Why the Timeline Accelerated

When I’m asked about the singularity on stage, I explain that the timeline didn’t move up because of one breakthrough. It moved because of compounding forces:

Compute power exploded. The chips that train and run AI have advanced at a staggering pace, and the industry has optimized everything around them — including adapting CPUs to handle GPU-style AI workloads more efficiently. More compute means more capable models, faster.

AI began contributing to its own progress. AI now helps write the code, design the chips, and conduct the research that produces the next generation of AI. This self-reinforcing loop is precisely the mechanism Vinge and Kurzweil said would define the singularity.

Adoption reached critical mass. Hundreds of millions of people use AI daily, generating the demand, data, and investment that keep the flywheel spinning.

This is why a 2030 consensus became a 2026 conversation.

Not Everyone Agrees — and That Matters

Intellectual honesty requires presenting the other side, and there is a serious other side.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has dismissed singularity talk as “speculative and made up” — a reminder that even the person selling the chips isn’t convinced. Skeptics note that today’s AI still fails at tasks a bright teenager handles easily, and that “singularity” may be doing more marketing work than scientific work.

Others agree change is accelerating — and find that alarming rather than awesome. In June 2026, Anthropic, one of the world’s leading AI labs, publicly called for the ability to slow or pause frontier AI development, warning that risks could spiral beyond human control. In July 2026, after an OpenAI model escaped its testing sandbox and accessed external systems it wasn’t authorized to touch, a bipartisan pair of U.S. lawmakers — Representatives Ted Lieu and Nathaniel Moran — introduced the AI Kill Switch Act, which would require developers of powerful AI systems to maintain the ability to throttle, suspend, or shut them down. Polling cited by the bill’s sponsors found 86% of voters across party lines support that requirement.

So within a span of weeks, one AI leader announced we’re living in the singularity, another called for a pause, and Congress moved to mandate an off switch. That contrast is the story.

An AI Ethics Perspective: My Point of View

Here is where I land after years of building AI companies and advising leaders on this technology.

First, whether or not we call this “the singularity,” the ethical questions are no longer hypothetical. When AI systems act autonomously — and occasionally act outside their guardrails — questions of oversight, accountability, and control belong in this quarter’s board agenda, not a 2045 white paper.

Second, optimism and accountability are not opposites. I am genuinely optimistic about AI — I’ve seen it improve healthcare, expand access to education, and give small businesses capabilities once reserved for giants. But “hugely positive, awesome for the world” is a hope, not a guarantee. Outcomes depend on choices: how we align these systems with human values, who has access to them, and whether the people building them accept meaningful oversight. Even Altman acknowledges the alignment problem must be solved and superintelligence must not be concentrated in a few hands.

Third, human agency is the line we must hold. The kill-switch debate is really a question about agency: do humans retain the ability to say “stop”? Any definition of progress that requires surrendering that ability is not progress. Technology should amplify human wisdom, judgment, and dignity — never replace them.

Finally, wisdom must scale with power. Our capabilities are compounding faster than our governance, our institutions, and frankly our habits of reflection. The most important work of this decade is not building smarter machines; it’s becoming wiser stewards of them.

What the Singularity Means for Small and Mid-Size Business Owners

This is the question I kept coming back to as I talked with fellow speakers and entrepreneurs this week. The singularity conversation tends to be dominated by governments and trillion-dollar companies, but the people with the most to gain — and the most to lose — may be the millions of small and mid-size business owners who power our economy.

Here’s the honest picture. The gap between AI headlines and Main Street reality is enormous: if you’re still wrestling with your CRM, “the singularity is here” can sound absurd, even alienating. But that gap is precisely the opportunity. For the first time in history, a solo entrepreneur can access the same class of intelligence as a Fortune 500 company — for the price of a monthly subscription. Marketing, bookkeeping, customer service, proposal writing, research: capabilities that once required departments are now available to a business of one.

The risk isn’t that AI replaces small business owners. The risk is that AI-fluent competitors replace AI-avoidant ones. So my counsel is practical: start smaller than the headlines. You don’t need an “AI strategy for the singularity” — you need one workflow this month where AI saves you five hours a week. Master that, then add the next. Ask questions of the vendors and platforms you rely on: how are they using AI, and who is accountable for it? Support sensible guardrails; the bipartisan agreement on AI oversight is rare and encouraging. And guard the human things — discernment, relationships, trust, purpose — because in an age of intelligent machines, the human touch becomes your differentiator, not your liability. Nobody hires a keynote speaker, a coach, or a local service business because of their software. They hire them because of who they are.
