According to a study by the Centers for Disease Control, 1/4 to 1/3 of the population reports a high level of stress at work and almost 10% of people are working longer hours. The reality is that many people report the need to be ‘on’ seven days per week and this, in combination with, reported stress over world affairs, income, and family life, is the perfect storm of change. People are demanding that their employers pay attention, and regardless of what position you hold, and especially if you own your own business – here is what you need to know about work-life balance in 2018.
This infographic is generously provided by Family Living Today. It illustrates just how far we have gone in terms of stress encroaching on any semblance of balance. From 40% of people saying that it is okay to answer work-related emails at the dinner table to the increased risk of coronary artery disease to those who work over 55 hours per week, these statistics portray the urgency of opening up dialogue on the subject of how we can still achieve our tasks and enjoy our lives.
As a work-life balance speaker, and someone who periodically has found herself out of balance, one of the biggest things I hear is the stress that comes from being plugged in 7-days per week. The reality is that we do not have to answer texts on Sunday mornings and we do not have to reply to emails at midnight. We can have a semblance of work-life balance if we are more efficient with the time we have, set disciplined boundaries, and be intentional.
